Mouth Guard Hel(l)p

I'm under 5', but Joe the Sports Authority Salesman told me that, no matter what, I need an adult mouth guard. I just finished prepping this thing and I can't put it in my mouth without retching. My upper lip sticks out like Rocky's after Apollo Creed has given his face the beatdown.
If anyone has mouth guard experience or advice, or can point me in the right direction, I would be much obliged.
Also, a shout out to Leslie for some truly amazing video of her competition yesterday. http://bjjgrrl.wordpress.com/

  1. Sounds like I have the same problem you do, the upper lip sticking out and the gagging. I've also had to trim some off the back of different types of mouthguards to make them fit.

I don't have any real advice, except to try different styles. When you find one that works stick with it. Also you do get used to wearing the mouthguard after a while. Just keep your breathing normal and don't think about gagging.

If you decide to stay with BJJ you might want to get a mouthguard made by your dentist. It is an incredibly disgusting experience if you have a strong gag reflex but it will fit better.

  2. Thanks, Laura. What brand worked for you? I bought Shock Doctor. I have a feeling I will go the dentist route if I stay in past March.

  3. I have this one in pink (http://www.shockdoctor.com/product/gel-max-mouthguard.aspx) and I have tried this one (http://www.shockdoctor.com/product/power-gel-ultra-mouthguard.aspx) but I couldn't get it to fit right.

The first one makes my lip stick out funny, but it fits the best.

In the past I had two dentist fit mouthguards they fit really well, but I still gagged on them.

    Good luck.

  4. Thanks. I snipped mine tonight. We'll see how it works.

  5. I'm sure the Gel styles probably have more protection, but they're made for someone waaay bigger than me. I love my Shock Doctor Pro.

  6. I used the kids' Shock Doctors for a while, but even they were too big for my mouth. I finally went the custom mouth guard route. I thought I was going to suffocate while the mold dried! But it actually fits really well. It isn't very thick, so it wouldn't work for striking, but it keeps my teeth from clanging together. I still gag sometimes, but then, I have an easily triggered gag reflex.

And thank you for the shout out. :)

  7. Skip the mouthguard. I know, just cus I haven't lost a tooth yet.. blah blah blah. I am small too, been rolling 2+ yrs, 7 days a week, without one. Better than gagging and not breathing well etc.

  8. @G, you're crazy. I've taken a few good shots to the mouth with my guard in that convinced me it was a good idea. Same concept as my snowboarding helmet. ;)
@leslie What brand of custom one did you get? I've been looking at Gladiator($50), but the Shock Doctor custom looks awesome (But really $150...seriously?).
@Shark Girl Good luck. I hope you don't spend too much money selecting, fitting, trimming, and tossing mouth guards. :)
